Program overview

The HP Alpha RetainTrust program underscores HP’s commitment to providing long-term business continuity for AlphaServer customers. Tru64 UNIX® to HP-UX 11i transition modules show you the business value of moving forward with HP while mitigating the risk, by providing you information to plan and design your transition to HP-UX 11i on HP Integrity servers.

The transition modules address key topic areas of your transition, including: platform infrastructure (servers, operating systems, storage and tape devices); custom code applications; packaged applications from independent software vendors (ISVs); and databases for Oracle and Sybase. Modules provide you a method and framework to approach your transition across the planning, design, implementation, and management phases.

There are several variants of the Transition Modules (TMs), based on the most common source-destination platform pairings observed during customer transitions:

Modules in this release

The focus of the transition modules currently available is on Planning and Design. The planning modules provide information to help you assess your own environment and conduct high-level planning. Those high-level plans are then used when entering the design phase, where more specific details on how the transition will be conducted are defined.

The following table lists the Tru64 UNIX to HP-UX 11i transition modules that are currently available:

Transition module Description
Platform Infrastructure
  • Planning module V1.9  (Updated!)

Provides high-level planning information and recommendations to help assess your efforts to transition platform infrastructure, including servers, operating systems, storage and tape devices.

Custom Code

  • Planning module V1.6  (Updated!)

Provides high-level planning information and recommendations to help assess your efforts to transition custom code applications and addresses programming-related transition issues.

Database for Oracle

  • Planning module V1.6  (Updated!)

Provides high-level planning information and recommendations to help assess your efforts to transition Oracle databases and addresses database-related transition issues.

Database for Sybase

  • Planning module V1.0  (New!)

Provides high-level planning information and recommendations to help assess your efforts to transition Sybase databases and addresses database-related transition issues.

Packaged Applications

  • Planning & design module V1.10  (Updated!)

Provides planning and design information and recommendations to help assess your efforts to transition packaged applications from independent software vendors (ISVs).

Objectives & prerequisites

Specifically, these transition modules will

  • Provide you a method and framework to approach your transition planning and design
  • Provide you the means to begin to gauge level of effort and transition duration
  • Save you time and effort in planning and designing your transition
  • Help you identify the areas within each module that require further planning or design, and those that do not pertain to your transition
  • Help you define a customized plan for those areas that require further planning and design
To get the most from these transition modules you should
  • Be familiar with your long term business and technical goals
  • Be familiar with the current hardware and operating system environment (Platform infrastructure)
  • Be familiar with the application development environment and with Tru64 UNIX (Custom code applications)
  • Be familiar with your current ISV packaged applications, if any (Packaged applications)
  • If you are transitioning a database, understand the current overall database design and implementation; your database usage, characteristics, and resource demands; and your database access points and dependencies (Database for Oracle, Database for Sybase)
  • Understand the current overall architectural implementation
  • Be aware of any system design goals that were used in the current implementation
  • Be aware of any system design goals that are desired for the target platform

The Transition Modules are packaged in a downloadable Zip file for use by HP’s Tru64 UNIX customers. This Zip file contains a web tree structure that allows you to browse the Tru64 UNIX to HP-UX 11i transition modules and their associated documents using your web browser. The Zip file is encrypted and HP’s Tru64 UNIX customers will need to register for a password key. You need to agree to the license terms and submit your registration information in order to receive the password key that unlocks the Zip file. The key will be sent to the email address specified in your registration.

In addition to the Transition Modules, there are several migration tools available to assist Tru64 UNIX customers who are planning to transition files and or Oracle databases to HP-UX 11i. The current set of available migration tools are the Database Migration Planning Assistant (DBMPA), and the Database Migration Script Set (DBMSS). Tru64 UNIX customers can download the available tools at the same time as the Transition Modules Zip file, or can return to download at a later time.

Note: The Transition Modules download procedure, license terms, and password key apply equally to all files -- the DBMPA should be installed on a Microsoft Windows system; the DBMSS should be installed on an HP-UX system.

To download a Transition Modules Zip file or any of the available migration tools:

  1. Fill out the registration form
    • You must read, understand, and agree to the license terms. If you do not agree with the license terms, click the button labeled "No, I do not accept the license terms".
    • Click on Submit to send the registration and request the password key.
    • HP will validate your customer registration information. Assuming a successful validation, within two to three business days, you will receive the password key at the email address you provided during registration.

    Already registered?
If you are already registered and have a current password key, you can go directly to the download page.

  2. On the download page, right-click on Transition Modules Zip file to save the encrypted Zip file on your local disk drive.

  3. You can download the available migration tools at the same time as the Transition Modules Zip file, or you can return to download at a later time. The save operation for the migration tools are similar to that of the Transition Modules Zip file.
